Where to Eat

Where to Eat Before a Show in Shepherd’s Bush

A good pre-show dinner starts with the clock, not the menu. Choose somewhere near your venue, check when its kitchen serves food, and leave enough time to pay, walk over and get inside.

This guide groups six options around the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Bush Theatre and Bush Hall. The emphasis is on making dinner fit the performance—not finding the most elaborate meal you can squeeze in beforehand.Information checked on 12 September 2026 using published restaurant and venue information. This is a researched planning guide, not a first-hand dining review. Menus, prices and opening hours can change.

Where to eat: the quick guide

Walking times are approximate planning allowances based on the listed locations, not timed walks. They exclude queues and entry checks. Allow more time for busy crossings, mobility requirements or finding the correct entrance.

Check the ticket before booking the table

A 7pm doors time is not the same as a 7pm performance. The Empire says tickets should show when doors open, while event pages give doors and curfew information. It also warns that stage times may not be published because they can change. Bush Hall directs visitors to individual event information for timings. O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire: timings and entry policies Bush Hall: event and entry information

For a play, work backwards from the advertised curtain time. Our suggested target is to reach the theatre 30 minutes before the performance, with extra time for any access arrangements.

For a gig, choose your intended arrival time before booking dinner. Arriving for doors is a sensible starting point when support-act timings are uncertain. Allow longer when joining the queue early matters to you; do not build the evening around an assumed headliner time.

As a planning rule, keep roughly two hours between a restaurant reservation and your intended venue arrival for an unhurried sit-down meal. Around 90 minutes can work for a straightforward order nearby, provided the restaurant agrees with your deadline. Neither allowance is a promise about service speed.

With less than an hour, avoid committing to a full restaurant meal. Ask about a confirmed collection time, or have a snack and make a separate plan for dinner. A short walk cannot rescue an order that arrives late.

Before the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire

The Empire is on Shepherd’s Bush Green, W12 8TT. These two options keep the onward journey short. O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire: getting here

Bocconi: an early Italian dinner near the Empire

Bocconi is at 5 Goldhawk Road, W12 8QQ. Its published weekday opening time is 4pm, which makes it worth considering when you need to finish eating before a later dinner service would get going. Bocconi: opening hours and reservations

The menu covers pasta, risotto and substantial mains. Published examples include chicken Milanese at £16.90 and sea bass fillet at £19.90. These are individual food prices, not an all-in dinner budget. Bocconi: food menu

Hours and booking: Monday–Friday, 4pm–11pm; Saturday–Sunday, noon–11pm. These are opening hours: a separate last kitchen-order time was not stated on the pages checked. Confirm food service for your reservation and call 020 3489 7113 to book or enquire. Bocconi: opening hours and reservations

Walking route: Head towards the Goldhawk Road junction with Shepherd’s Bush Green, use the appropriate crossing and follow the western edge of the Green to the Empire. Allow 2–4 minutes.

For an early gig, this would be our starting point from the two Empire options. Reserve rather than relying on a spare table, and tell staff your departure time when you sit down.

Chet’s: Thai-American food when dinner is part of the evening

Chet’s is inside The Hoxton, 65 Shepherd’s Bush Green, W12 8QE. Its Thai-American menu combines Thai influences with dishes drawn from American diner cooking. Chet’s: restaurant details The Hoxton: Chet’s bookings

The linked night menu includes fried chicken khao soi at £22 and yellow courgette curry at £17. It also states a discretionary 12.5% service charge, so allow for that alongside drinks and any extra dishes. Chet’s: night menu and prices (PDF)

Food-service hours: Dinner runs 5.30pm–10.30pm. Weekday lunch is noon–4pm, with weekend brunch from 11am–4pm. The afternoon gap matters: a 5pm arrival is too early for the advertised dinner service. Chet’s: published food-service times (PDF)

Booking: Use the restaurant’s online booking facility. Groups of nine or more are directed to a separate enquiry form. The Hoxton: Chet’s bookings

Walking route: Leave the hotel onto Shepherd’s Bush Green and follow its western side south towards the Empire. Allow 3–5 minutes.

Chet’s makes more sense when you have time to settle in. A 5.30pm dinner booking can suit a later venue arrival; it is less useful when your priority is joining an early doors queue.

Before Bush Theatre

Bush Theatre is at 7 Uxbridge Road, W12 8LJ. It is not Bush Hall: check the name on your ticket before deciding where to eat. Bush Theatre: venue details Bush Hall: address and travel directions

The Library Bar: pizza without another street journey

The Library Bar lets you eat in the same building as your performance. Its published food offer includes margherita and pepperoni pizzas. Pizza is not served between 7pm and 8pm, so do not turn up at 7.05pm expecting a quick meal before a 7.30pm curtain. Bush Theatre: Library Bar and pizza service

Hours: Monday–Saturday from 5pm, or 1pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, until late. The bar opens only on performance days and is card-only. For a matinee, confirm when pizza service begins rather than assuming it matches the bar’s opening time. Bush Theatre: Library Bar and pizza service

Dining arrangements: The theatre advises arriving early because the bar gets busy before performances. Aim to eat comfortably before the service pause. For a group, ask about arrangements in advance rather than treating theatre tickets as a dining reservation. Bush Theatre: Library Bar and pizza service

Getting to your seat: There is no street walk, but still leave time for the facilities and finding the entrance to the correct performance space.

Defector’s Weld: pub food without an afternoon kitchen gap

Defector’s Weld is at 170 Uxbridge Road, W12 8AA. Its published food-service hours run through the afternoon, making it useful when an early meal is the priority. Defector’s Weld: kitchen hours and bookings

The menu includes cyder-battered haddock and chips at £17.75, chicken and leek pie at £18, and a plant-based burger listed as “Loaded Vegan” at £17.50. These prices exclude drinks and any applicable service charge. Defector’s Weld: food menu

Kitchen hours and booking: Monday–Saturday, noon–10pm; Sunday, noon–9pm. Book through the pub’s website or call 020 8749 0008. Defector’s Weld: kitchen hours and bookings

Walking route: Follow Uxbridge Road west towards Shepherd’s Bush Market and Bush Theatre at number 7, using marked crossings where needed. Allow 3–5 minutes.

For a 7.30pm play, consider a 5.30pm table rather than pushing dinner closer to curtain-up. That leaves space to order, eat and settle the bill without spending the whole meal checking your phone.

Before a show at Bush Hall

Bush Hall is at 310 Uxbridge Road, W12 7LJ. Its own food provision is limited to bar snacks, so arrange dinner separately when you need a full meal. Bush Hall: address and travel directions Bush Hall: event and entry information

Esarn Kheaw: Thai food almost next door

Esarn Kheaw is at 314 Uxbridge Road, W12 7LJ, almost next door to Bush Hall. Its reservation page explicitly recommends booking. Esarn Kheaw: dining hours and reservations

The Thai menu includes papaya salad, laab and grilled dishes. The linked menu lists grilled poussin at £12.95; rice and drinks can add to the total, and the menu states a discretionary 13% service charge for eating in. Esarn Kheaw: food menu (PDF)

Dining hours and booking: Monday–Saturday, 5pm–10pm; closed Sunday. Use the reservation form and look for the confirmation email, or call 020 8743 8930. The restaurant also offers takeaway. Esarn Kheaw: dining hours and reservations

Walking route: Walk along Uxbridge Road from number 314 to Bush Hall at number 310. Allow 1–2 minutes, including any pavement crossings.

This is our most practical starting point for a Monday-to-Saturday Bush Hall dinner because there is so little travelling left afterwards. Book early enough to finish before your intended venue arrival; proximity is not a reason to order the final course too late.

The Hawthorn: a pub dinner for a less hurried evening

The Hawthorn is at 434 Uxbridge Road, W12 0NS, in the pub previously known as The Pocket Watch. Its website describes a focus on straightforward pub food. Use the current name when searching or booking. The Hawthorn: pub details

Kitchen hours: Lunch runs noon–2.30pm, Monday–Friday, and noon–3pm on Saturday. Dinner is 6pm–9pm Monday–Thursday, 5pm–9.30pm Friday, and 6pm–9.30pm Saturday. Sunday food service runs noon–8pm. The Hawthorn: kitchen hours and bookings

Booking: Use the pub’s booking page, call 020 3337 8779, or email info@thehawthornpub.com. The Hawthorn: kitchen hours and bookings

Walking route: Follow Uxbridge Road east, back towards Shepherd’s Bush Green, until you reach Bush Hall at number 310. Allow 8–10 minutes.

The dinner start time is the deciding factor. We would not choose a 6pm kitchen opening for a relaxed meal when the aim is to join a 7pm doors queue. Friday’s earlier start gives you more room. On other evenings, consider it for a later venue arrival rather than trying to hurry the meal.

Two sample schedules that leave breathing room

These are suggested schedules to agree with the restaurant, not guaranteed service times.

For a 7.30pm play at Bush Theatre

Book a nearby table for 5.30pm. Ask for the bill around 6.40pm, aim to leave by 6.50pm, and reach the theatre by 7pm.

That leaves half an hour for tickets, facilities and finding your seat. When eating in the Library Bar, keep a similarly early meal slot rather than using the lack of a walk as a reason to order at the last moment.

For a gig with 7pm doors

A 5pm table at Bocconi before the Empire, or Esarn Kheaw before Bush Hall on one of its opening days, is a more comfortable starting point than a 6pm booking. Both publish opening hours that accommodate that slot. Bocconi: opening hours and reservations Esarn Kheaw: dining hours and reservations

Aim to settle up by 6.30pm, then walk to the venue and join the queue at your chosen time. Adjust earlier for access arrangements or when getting into the queue early matters. Check the event listing again before leaving home.

What to say when booking

A departure time is more useful than simply saying “we’re going to a show”.

“Could we book a table for two at 5.30pm on [date]? We have tickets for [venue] and need to leave the restaurant by 6.50pm. Will the kitchen be serving then, and is that enough time for the meal we’re planning?”

Raise dietary requirements, children’s seating and step-free access at the same time. For allergies, ask about the specific dishes and preparation arrangements rather than relying solely on a short online description. Defector’s Weld and Chet’s both ask diners to inform staff about allergies. Defector’s Weld: food menu Chet’s: night menu and prices (PDF)

Getting there—and avoiding last-minute surprises

Shepherd’s Bush and Shepherd’s Bush Market are different stations. The Empire’s travel page identifies the former’s Central line station and the latter’s Circle and Hammersmith & City line station. Plan your journey to the restaurant first, then check the onward walk to the venue. O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire: getting here

Bush Hall estimates a five-minute walk from Shepherd’s Bush Market, compared with about 15 minutes from Shepherd’s Bush Central line station. Allow for that difference when choosing your dinner time. Bush Hall: address and travel directions

Do not plan to take an unfinished takeaway into a gig or pop out between bands for dinner. Both the Empire and Bush Hall prohibit outside food and drink and do not allow readmission, with advance contact advised for medical requirements. The Empire also restricts bags to one small bag per person, no larger than A4, with a maximum depth of 15cm. O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire: timings and entry policies Bush Hall: event and entry information

Before confirming the table, check the restaurant’s food-service window, the exact venue and your intended arrival time. Then book a meal that fits all three. Dinner should be part of the evening—not the reason you miss its beginning.
